Sands China Ltd. honoured outstanding team members and teams Thursday with a ceremony for the Because We Care Team Member Awards, held at The Parisian Macao’s Parisian Theatre. The company has hosted the awards ceremony for four consecutive years to recognise outstanding team members for exemplifying Sands China’s Because We Care Culture of Service.

As the largest developer and operator of integrated resorts in Macao, Sands China views its close to 30,000 team members as its most valuable asset. Thursday’s awards ceremony is one of the ways the company rewards dedicated team members for exceptional levels of service to the company and its customers.

“Our team members are the greatest resource we have as a company, and we appreciate their contributions immensely,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “Initiatives like these team member awards are important because they reinforce the company’s core values and recognise team members who exemplify those values in their daily interactions with guests and with each other.”

With the aim of celebrating a greater number of exceptional individuals and teams for their achievements, the latest incarnation of the awards has been expanded from one winner per award category to three – one each in gold, silver and bronze designations. The number of top nominees has also been increased from Top 5 to Top 10.

A total of 497 team members were named top nominees, after being shortlisted by a judging panel of previous award winners and top nominees. Top nominees for each award category were then decided by team members as a whole through a company-wide vote. Shortlisting and team member voting in this way increased transparency and fairness, collected opinions from a broader spectrum of team members, and, more importantly, let team members learn about the inspirational stories of top nominees.

Among the 497 top nominees, 42 are gaming team members who have joined Sands China’s various horizontal career development programmes. While building new skill sets in different work environments, these team members have continued to excel, earning well-deserved recognition from guests and fellow colleagues for their exceptional standards of service.

A total of 16 exceptional team members and seven outstanding teams (totalling 248 team members) emerged as gold, silver and bronze award winners in seven categories: the Influential Service Award, the Exceptional Spirit Award, the Impressive Performance Award, the ECO360° Live. Green* Award, the People’s Choice Award, the Best Leadership Award and the Outstanding Teamwork Award.

Over 1,000 team members and management staff attended the awards ceremony, with nominees’ friends and family members in attendance as well.

The expansion of the awards saw more top nominees and award winners receive attractive prizes in recognition of their noteworthy performances, including cash prizes totalling over MOP 440,000. Each gold award recipient also received a trophy, a Because We Care certificate, special pins symbolising the company’s cultural values, a one-night hotel stay in Hong Kong with round-trip, first-class Cotai Water Jet tickets for two, and MOP 5,000 in food and beverage vouchers.

Sands China continues to invest in its team members as a way to strengthen this valued core asset. The company currently employs close to 30,000 team members, and by the end of 2017, nearly 30 per cent of Sands China’s workforce will have served in the company for 10 consecutive years or more. Currently, over 1,600 of them are serving in managerial roles and 95 per cent are Macao locals, with over 91 per cent of them having been promoted at least twice.

In 2016, Sands China delivered over 1.25 million hours of training for developing its team members. Additionally, in order to prepare local employees for managerial positions in both existing and future projects, Sands China creates and delivers executive development, service leadership, talent development and language courses.
