Polish Director Kieślowski’s World-renowned Masterpiece Decalogue

Cinematheque.Passion (which is under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau) will be screening the digitally restored version of Decalogue in late June and early July. Decalogue is a masterpiece made for a Polish TV station in the late 1980s by the internationally-acclaimed Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski, well-known for his exploration of the inner self and a favourite of art cinephiles.

Decalogue is a television series in ten episodes, each focusing on one of the Ten Commandments of the Bible. The stories are set in contemporary Warsaw, with all the characters, caught in the ethical struggles of everyday life, sharing the same big housing estate.

This masterpiece by Krzysztof Kieślowski (1941–1996) is one of the greatest twentieth century achievements in visual storytelling. The ten- hour long films draw from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, grappling deftly with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passaging of time. Co-written for the screen with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, shot by nine different cinematographers, with stirring music by Zbigniew Preisner and compelling performances from both established and unknown actors, Decalogue arrestingly explores the unknowable forces that shape our lives. In the 1990’s, Kieślowski rocked the world by his critically-acclaimed films The Double Life of Veronique, and the Three Colours trilogy, establishing extraordinary film language, film style and film content.

Kieślowski was born on 27 June 1941. In commemoration of late Kieślowski’s 76th anniversary, Cinematheque.Passion specially chose 27 June to begin featuring his great art works Decalogue. The first 6 Decalogues will be screened from 27 to 29 of June while the other 4 Decalogues on 4 and 5 of July.
